How this calculator works
We convert your gas usage into delivered heat (therms × furnace AFUE), then price the same heat two ways: through your furnace at your state's residential natural gas price, and through a heat pump at HSPF2 efficiency and your state's residential electricity rate. Prices come from the EIA's current monthly data for your state, not national averages.
HSPF2 is the federal heating-efficiency rating: BTUs of heat delivered per watt-hour of electricity. A standard new heat pump is around 7.8–8.5; cold-climate models exceed 9. Because a heat pump moves heat rather than making it, it typically delivers 2–3× more heat per unit of energy than any furnace can.
