How we calculate it

Charging cost = EPA efficiency (kWh per 100 miles) × your state's residential electricity rate × a 1.08 factor for charging losses. Home Level 2 charging wastes roughly 5–10% of energy as heat, which most calculators ignore.

The federal 30C home-charger tax credit expired June 30, 2026, and the 30D/25E vehicle credits ended September 30, 2025, so the running-cost gap against gas is now the main financial case for an EV. In cheap-electricity states that gap is still large; in the most expensive states it can nearly close.
